William K. VanCanagan was born in Roslyn, New York. Bill was admitted to practice in Montana and U.S. District Court, District of Montana in 1981, the U.S. Tax Court and U.S. Court of Federal Claims in 1997, and the U.S. Court of Appeals, Tenth Circuit in 1999.

Bill also specializes in complex land use matters, including subdivision and zoning law, where he represents private landowners and developers before state and federal regulatory agencies.
